Scaling & Root Planing
A regular dental cleaning and an improved oral hygiene routine at home could be enough to treat gum disease in its earliest stages. In severe cases, though, we’ll need to perform a deep cleaning. The first step is scaling, which involves scraping away all the plaque and tartar that has accumulated around your gums. We can then use root planing to smooth the surfaces of your tooth. This will ultimately give your gums a chance to heal.
Laser Pocket Reduction
Advanced gum disease tends to form “pockets” as the gums recede from the teeth; measuring these pockets helps us figure out how severe your infection is. For extremely deep pockets, standard scaling and root planing might not be enough. In these cases, we can use a laser to remove diseased tissue and sterilize the area. This surgery is traditionally done with a scalpel, but a laser is much more precise and can be used to only treat the affected area; it also significantly speeds up the healing process.
